How to make an underwater robot

A tethered ROV build with sealed electronics, bilge-pump thrusters, camera, lights, neutral buoyancy and leak testing before deep water.

An underwater robot is mostly a waterproofing project. Controls are not hard compared with keeping electronics dry, managing buoyancy and recovering the robot if something fails. Start tethered so power, video and retrieval stay simple.

Build and test in stages: empty enclosure in a bucket, then shallow pool, then short missions. Add leak detection inside the electronics tube and keep the first version slow, visible and easy to pull back by the tether.

Design variants

Pool inspection ROV

Short tether, low voltage and simple joystick control.

Lake camera ROV

Stronger lights, longer tether and sealed strain relief.

Sensor ROV

Add temperature or turbidity sensors after waterproofing is proven.

Practical safety note

Treat the generated output as a prototype plan, not a certified product. Body-adjacent, high-voltage, optical-energy and mobility builds need qualified review before real-world use.

FAQ

Should it be autonomous?

Not first. A tethered manual ROV is much easier to recover and debug.

How do I test for leaks?

Test the empty enclosure under water with tissue inside, then add leak sensors before electronics.

Can Wi-Fi work underwater?

No, not reliably. Use a tether or keep radio electronics above the surface.
