Trace-detection nose module for quadruped robots

A swappable PID + electrochemical sensor head that turns a quadruped robot into a mobile trace-detection unit for narcotics, explosives precursors, or VOC leaks. Same sensor stack used in industrial gas-detection meters; legitimate use cases are security, customs, and chemical-plant safety, not at-home recreational sniffing.

Trace detection is a real industry. Customs ports, large-event security, refineries, and pharmaceutical warehouses all use either trained K9 dogs or instrumented humans walking with handheld meters. Both have downsides: dogs need rest cycles, trainer pay, and heat tolerance; handheld humans don't cover large areas efficiently. A quadruped robot with a calibrated sensor head walks 2 km/hr indefinitely, doesn't need lunch breaks, and produces timestamped log files. For the customer organizations buying this, the addon is a cost-per-coverage-area improvement, not a novelty.

The sensor head houses a Photoionization Detector (PID — measures volatile organic compounds via UV ionization, sensitive to ppb levels) and 3 swappable electrochemical cells targeting specific compound families. Standard configurations: (a) explosive-precursor detection — TNT, PETN, ammonium nitrate; (b) narcotic detection — cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl; (c) industrial VOC — hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, chlorine, benzene. The cells are commodity (RAE Systems / Industrial Scientific compatible), $80-180 each, swap in 2 minutes. Calibration is a 30-second zero-air procedure performed at start of shift.

Important: this addon is sold to vetted customers (security firms, customs agencies, industrial safety organizations) under the same compliance regime as trace-detection handhelds (ITAR awareness for explosive cells in some markets). It is not a consumer product. The DIY parts list we publish doesn't include the explosive-detection cells — those require an end-user agreement we work out with each buyer separately. The narcotic-detection variant is similarly access-controlled. The VOC industrial-safety variant is openly available.

Variants

  • Industrial-safety variant (open distribution)
VOC + H2S + chlorine + ammonia configuration. For chemical plants, refineries, water treatment. No special access required; ships with the BOM as listed.
  • Customs / security variant (restricted)
Narcotic-detection cells + PID. Requires end-user agreement. Sold to vetted customs agencies, port authorities, and large-venue security firms. Contact us for procurement.
  • Search-and-rescue variant
VOC + CO2 + temperature configuration tuned to detect human breath/scent in collapsed-building scenarios. Active deployment at FEMA/SOREM-eligible response teams. Restricted-access.

Install

  1. 1.Mount the sealed housing on the robot's spine hardpoints. Orient the air inlet downward at ~45° (this is how detection-K9 noses orient when working — the geometry is intentional).
  2. 2.Insert the chosen electrochemical cells into slots 1-3. Each cell is keyed; can't be inserted backward.
  3. 3.Connect the calibration kit, run the 30-second zero-air procedure. The ESP32 saves the zero-point and signals 'ready' via a green LED.
  4. 4.Configure the patrol path on your robot SDK. Common pattern: walk perimeter at 0.5 m/s, stop every 5m for 8 seconds (gives sensors time to settle), continue. Total log file: GPS position + 4 sensor readings + bookmark flag at 2 Hz.
  5. 5.Pull the SD card after the patrol. The CSV has timestamps + readings; bookmark flags mark anomalies (anything >3σ above baseline). Open in Excel or import into your existing detection workflow.

FAQ

Can this replace trained dogs?

Not entirely. Dogs still beat trace-detection electronics for some compound classes (especially low-vapor-pressure compounds like certain narcotics) and dogs work in conditions electronics struggle with (dusty environments, ambient odor masking). The robot is a complement: it covers more area more cheaply, the dog handles the high-confidence final search.

Is this legal to deploy?

Industrial-safety variant: yes everywhere. Security/customs variant: requires the same authority your existing handheld trace-detection has. We don't sell to private individuals for security applications — only to organizations with documented compliance authority.

How accurate is the trace detection?

PID at ppb level matches commercial industrial PID meters (Honeywell ToxiRAE Pro). Electrochemical cells match their handheld counterparts (RAE QRAE 3, Industrial Scientific ToxiPro). The robot adds spatial mapping; it doesn't change per-point accuracy.

What about false positives?

Real issue with any chemical sensor. Our firmware filters via cross-channel correlation (a real positive correlates across PID + electrochemical, a false positive often spikes only one). Reduces false-positive alerts by ~70% vs handheld threshold-only alarms. Real positives still need confirmation by a second method (K9 dog, or lab GC-MS) before law-enforcement action.

How do I get the restricted variants?

Contact us with your organization name, jurisdiction, and end-use case. We do basic vetting (public record check, organization legitimacy) and ship under a per-customer EUA. Lead time 2-4 weeks. Email legal@robohub.app.
