How to build a walking robot duck

Explore Open Duck Mini, learn how simulated walking reaches a real biped, and plan a separate voice-chat layer.

Open Duck Mini offers an open-source route to a duck-like biped. Its README describes a miniature Disney BDX-inspired robot about 35 cm tall with its legs extended. The README calls it a work in progress and an alpha that is not very easy to build. Check the repository and its linked bill of materials before buying parts; the dated mention of a planned v2 is not confirmation of a finished version.

Walking and talking are separate problems. Reinforcement learning trains a walking policy in simulation before transfer to hardware. The README shows training in Isaac Gym with AWD, a sim-to-sim step into MuJoCo, and sim-to-real walking described as starting to work. It names a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W for the onboard runtime and a switch from xl330 to more powerful Dynamixel xc330-M288-T leg servos. Treat these as the documented project configuration, not a validated recipe for a different body.

For a larger duck, plan stronger servos, revised structure and power, and retraining of the walking policy in simulation for the new geometry and mass. This is a design proposal, not a tested scale-up. Add optional voice chat on separate compute: microphone, a local or cloud speech/language model, and speaker. Keep model responses away from direct joint control; begin with the robot supported, protect pinch points, and disconnect the battery before mechanical work.

Core parts

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W or Pi 5

$40

The documented walking runtime uses Zero 2 W; a different board needs integration checks

Dynamixel xc330-M288-T leg servos

Documented leg-servo choice; select stronger actuators for a larger redesign only after engineering review

Frame, joints and feet

Start from the repository CAD and BOM; review geometry, joint play and pinch guards

Battery and regulated power

Follow the chosen hardware requirements; add suitable protection and a reachable disconnect

Raspberry Pi or mini PC

$90

Optional separate voice computer; choose speech models after checking compute and memory needs

USB microphone array

$28

Optional voice input with hardware mute and visible microphone indicator

Speaker or buzzer

$12

Optional audio output; use a speech-capable speaker for conversation

Support stand and physical stop

Proposed test equipment for supported motion checks before free walking

Design variants

Documented-size learning build

Start with the repository configuration and linked BOM. Reproduce simulation checks before supported hardware tests; the alpha documentation does not promise an easy build.

Larger research duck

Redesign around stronger servos, revised mass and geometry, power review and a newly trained walking policy. Do not assume a scaled frame can reuse the old policy.

Talking duck

Add a separate voice computer, mic and speaker after walking is stable. Use bounded high-level requests and a local motion safety gate; a conversation must never bypass the physical stop.

Practical safety note

Treat the generated output as a prototype plan, not a certified product. Body-adjacent, high-voltage, optical-energy and mobility builds need qualified review before real-world use.

FAQ

Is this an easy first robot?

The project README describes an alpha with mechanical play and an unfinished assembly guide. Read the current repository and its linked BOM before choosing parts. Its older v2 plan does not mean a v2 is out yet.

How does the duck learn to walk?

A reinforcement-learning policy is trained in simulation. Open Duck Mini documents Isaac Gym with AWD, transfer to MuJoCo and early sim-to-real walking. Simulation results are not a guarantee of safe hardware performance.

Can I make it bigger and add AI chat?

That is a proposed redesign: stronger servos, revised mechanics and power, and retraining in simulation. Run voice chat separately from walking; the documented Zero 2 W runtime is not evidence that it can run a full local conversation stack.

What should I protect during tests?

Support the body, keep fingers away from joints, provide a physical stop and disconnect the battery for adjustments. Match battery, charger and protection to the reviewed design. For voice, add hardware mute, a visible mic indicator and explicit control over cloud audio.

How does Microduck compare?

Pollen Robotics describes Microduck as a separate open-source biped: 25 cm, 800 g, 15 motors, camera, LiDAR, two IMUs, seven trained moves and a 50 Hz onboard policy loop. Its page describes training behaviours in simulation and deploying them.
